Marble Offcut Table

' Marble is used for construction and decoration purposes and its mineralogical constituents vary depending on its place of origin. Marble is processed for different applications generating a huge amount of waste either at quarries or at processing plants. During its processing, 30% percent of marble becomes waste because of being irregular in shape or smaller in size.' Consequently, between 690,000 and 920,000 tons of marble waste are generated annually.' National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).

In response to this significant waste issue associated with the use of marble, the Marble Offcut series was developed. To address this concern, Lipley and Parker visited marble yards in South East London, specifically within close proximity to their workshop. They requested broken offcuts of any shapes and sizes that would otherwise be discarded. London Marble LTD in Catford was particularly helpful, providing a variety of broken and cracked slabs in different shapes and colors.

For the contrasting material, steel was chosen due to its low stress value and the availability of recycled options. Recycled steel production by-products, such as slag, water, gas, and dust, boast a high recycling rate of 90%. While acknowledging that recycled steel may not be environmentally perfect, it was deemed the most suitable choice for this specific use case.

Each marble piece was then supported by a bespoke subframe, designed to accommodate its unique shape. This approach resulted in the creation of perfectly imperfect furniture without incurring stone machining costs and minimizing negative environmental implications.
